VISTA Voices: Ross Marino

Ross Marino serves at The Learning Community, a kindergarten through 8th grade public charter school based in Central Falls. The charter school movement began by promising to innovate and research new practices and to share that knowledge with public schools. To fulfill that original promise, The Learning Community has committed itself to collaborating with public schools through the work done by The Teaching Studio. The Teaching Studio is an integrated part of The Learning Community. Practicing teachers and specialists work as consultants and collaborators with public school teachers as well as maintaining their own classrooms. It is currently partnered with the Woonsocket and Smithfield school districts thanks to funding from The Rhode Island Foundation and The Kellogg Foundation.

Julie Silva began working for the First Star URI Academy, a non-profit that strives to improve access to college for at-risk foster youth. Later this summer, Julie will live on the URI campus with the foster students for a month, supervising the program while they take courses and become immersed in the college experience. She is starting to get to know the students on a personal level as they participate in educational workshops, college tours, and other enrichment opportunities. These events give Julie an opportunity to witness firsthand the life-altering effects of the program.
