Stuart Haruyama is a VISTA who works at RISD, helping to run community engagement programs while also maintaining and expanding various community partnerships. For Stuart, some of the highlights of working with this organization include assisting in the week-long POSE service program for incoming freshman, celebrating RISD’s new formal non-profit partnerships, and launching RISD’s new Community Liaison and LACE Fellowship programs.

Linsday Paiva works with Breakthrough Providence, a non-profit organization in the city with the dual mission of supporting low-income, first generation, college-bound middle school students and encouraging high school and college students to pursue a career in education. Within Breakthrough Providence is Students Teaching Students Institute (STSI), and Emily focuses on professional development workshops for schools, districts, community-based organizations, and teacher education programs in three main areas: relationship building, developing a culture of spirit and scholarship, and rigoritivity (creating learning environments that are both rigorous and creative).

The Rhode Island Student Service Summit (RISSS) is an annual, statewide conference for college students engaged in community service.
The Providence Plan recently re-launched the data tool, Rhode Island Community Profiles. This tool broadens access to data on such areas as population demographics, housing affordability, unemployment educational attainment, all specific to RI. The tool draws from such sources as the US Census Bureau, the RI Department of Health, RI State Police and Broadband RI.
The Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University recently launched a search for a Director of the Swearer Center for Public Service & Associate Dean of the College for Engaged Scholarship.
Emily Gonzalez is a VISTA that works with College Visions, where she is serving year as a College Advisor/Alumni Engagement Coordinator. College Visions aims to not only work with first generation students to matriculate into college, but also to graduate from college.
