Rhode Island Campus Compact held its 5th Annual Rhode Island Student Service Summit, this past Saturday at Rhode Island College. The event, funded by SERVE RI through the Scholarships for Service Program, was a great success. 70 students from 9 of Rhode Island’s colleges and universities participated in a full day of workshops and conversations surrounding the focus: Re-imagining Citizenship.
Nancy Thomas , Director of the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, delivered the keynote address.
The event also covered topics related to democracy from the ground up, realizing student impact, constructing community space, inspiring young minds – kids in service, and cross campus collaboration. Students also participated in a Lessons in Leadership discussion with local community leaders and non-profit Executive Directors. Participants in these discussions included: Mayor James Diossa, City of Central Falls, Rebekah Greenwald Speck, RiverzEdge Arts Project, Rick Benjamin, RI Poet Laureate, Sandra Cano, Navigant Credit Union, State Representative Frank Ferri, Warwick.
