From Hot Topic to Hothouse: Creating the Environment for Growth and Institutionalization of Community Engagement.
Building on a history of civic engagement within individual programs, Roger Williams University has expanded established examples into an institution-wide initiative that integrates and optimizes the insights of both professional and liberal arts programs; highly-valued partnerships with communities; recognizing community-driven timing and priorities; and reflecting the commitment to service diverse communities throughout our state and broader region. RWU is transforming community service, applied research projects, service-learning, internships, co-curricular experiences and emerging opportunities into an integrated civic engagement initiative.
RWU leaders in Community Engagement and Experiential Education facilitated this session that presented the RWU story in the context of the most important lessons learned and pitfalls to be avoided. Using RWU’s experience as a framework, participants worked in small groups to inventory their own institutional strengths and weaknesses.
