Where did you go to school? Hampshire College
What are your personal and professional interests?
My professional interests are creating educational spaces that are culturally relevant and accessible for all students. After my service, I plan to get my masters in educational studies to where I would like to research how race, class, gender and other categories of identity are affected by institutional structures. My personal interests are maintaining a healthy lifestyle and helping others do the same. I also love listening to music and cooking for family and friends.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
If I could have a superpower, I would love to fly.
Tell us your Story of Service. Why you choose to serve? How do you think you are impacting poverty?
I chose to serve as a VISTA because I wanted to give back and also learn from a community other than my own. Serving as a college adviser in Central Falls High School, specifically, puts me in a position to assist students in pursuing college. Statistically, completing college provides more job security than not attending college. My role at the school is to assist in creating a college-going culture so that more students are better informed and prepared for college when that time approaches. Creating more options for students after they graduate high school will provide them with more economic mobility in the future. Serving as a VISTA is a good way for me to pursue my passion of making education more accessible for marginalized groups of people. I don’t feel like I’m solving the entire issue but I see potential when a student’s questions are being answered and their needs are being met. My decision to serve was also to learn from the community I am serving. Since I have been at Central Falls, I have learned so much from the students and the staff. Central Falls High School is a community all in itself. It is always nice to witness the relationships that teachers and staff have with the students. I am learning the art of engaging students which makes working with them a more fulfilling process. With this, I am better equipped to provide them specific tools and resources. Although the process is not easy and it comes with making mistakes, serving as a VISTA is a true learning experience.
